God is a spirit, and when He created man, He made him a spiritual being. Man is a spirit, he has a soul, and he lives in a body. The part of us that reflects God’s nature is our spirit.

When someone accepts what Christ did on the cross, their spirit is made new. However, while the soul (which includes our mind, will, and emotions) and the body are bought by Christ’s blood, they are not fully changed or redeemed until Christ returns. As stated in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” This newness refers to our spirit, not necessarily our soul or body.

The Bible tells us that when we become Christians, all things become new. This specifically applies to our spirit, not to our soul or body. God seals each of His children with the Holy Spirit, guaranteeing eternal life (Ephesians 1:13-14). The term “seal” here is similar to how a product is sealed in a container—to keep impurities out and preserve what is good inside. This means that while our mind or body might struggle, our spirit remains pure and unaffected by these struggles. However, this does not give us the freedom to sin. Romans 6:1-2 warns us against continuing in sin, as sin can eventually damage our relationship with God and lead us back to spiritual death.

As sons and daughters of God, we have a responsibility to continuously renew our minds to align with God’s kingdom principles until Christ returns (Romans 12:1-2). Our task is to keep looking into God’s Word to understand who we already are in our spirit, acknowledge these spiritual realities, and bring them into our everyday lives. The soul or mind plays a crucial role—it either follows the desires of the flesh or the spirit. Its ability to submit to the spirit depends on how well it has been renewed to understand and operate according to God’s ways. May God help us in this journey, in Jesus’ name.
